The
election of 1800 was one to remember. This marked the change from the previous
age of Federalist to Democratic-Republican. Throughout this entire campaign it
was filled with betrayal and deception amongst parties. Unlike usual elections
at that time, there were four main candidates: Thomas Jefferson and Arron Burr
represented the democratic-republic while John Adams and Charles C. Pinckney
represented the Federalist. This caused conflict within the parties. Although
there were 4 main candidates, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were the front
runners.
John
Adams was the runner for the Federalist Party. In his previous term he was
ridiculed for the creation of the Alien and Sedition Act. Federalist had filled
the vast majority of government position. This gave most of the power to the
federalist at this time but after this election it shifted to Democratic -
Republican Party. John Adams received 63 electoral votes which did not win him
the election.
Thomas
Jefferson was a democratic- republican and throughout his campaign expressed his
disapproval of the Alien and Sedition Act. He often said they violated state
rights. Although him and Arron Burr received the same amount of electoral vote,
Thomas Jefferson had more popular votes. Thomas Jefferson believed that a simple
government best suited the needs of a republic. Thomas Jefferson would go on to
win the election of 1800.
After
a long, hard fought year between the two candidates, Jefferson came out with the
win. He was elected as the fourth President. He lead the country with strong
leadership and integrity!
